Get Your Life Back From Alcoholism

March 13, 2010 by Ishaan Rao

Sickness, hangover, late arrivals, extended lunch breaks, and early departures are some work characteristics that lead to reduced reliability and productivity. Alcoholism is considered to be a disease, and affects earnings as such. The physical and mental health problems associated with problem drinking have direct effects on labour market productivity and reliability.

This in turn leads to lessened earnings and fewer promotions and raises. Alcohol dependence can develop over the years and follows a generally predictable pattern. A tolerance of alcohol develops first, which means a person needs to consume greater quantities of alcohol before the same effects are noticed. Over a period of time, the person may lose control over their drinking and may not be able to stop even if they want to. And if alcohol consumption is reduced or stopped, withdrawal symptoms can be experienced which can range from annoying to life-threatening.

The biggest problem of an alcoholic is the problem of denial. They will not easily accept that they have any problem with their alcoholism. They feel that consuming alcohol suits their status and also they have been consuming alcohol since a very long time. Due to this reason, they will not want to accept that these people need any kind of treatment. Since they are with their alcoholism, their bodies have become immune to alcohol and in fact most of the emotions that they feel will be a direct consequence of their alcoholism.

Hence it becomes more difficult to bring them out of the addiction. For example, they may have become familiar to consume alcohol whenever they are in depression. This makes the alcohol addiction closely connected. Alcoholism has spread like an epidemic everywhere around the globe. It is not only the young, but also the older people who are succumbing to alcohol addiction. It is often difficult to detect if a person is an alcoholic because they may have been drinking and yet doing all the work and activities that any normal person does. They are called functional alcoholics as they are very unaware of their problem, having always been able to perform all the day-to-day activities.

One very essential step is to search for a rehab center that runs a senior addiction treatment program. This can also be done with the help of the Internet or contact some substance abuse authority. You can visit the state health website and email them about your requirements. Seeking help from a trained professional is the wisest thing that you could do. To overcome this destructive disease, there are support groups, medical and alternative therapies available. With will, determination and the willingness to deal with the problems behind the addiction, you can come out of it.

Especially because they will be living amongst people of the same age group as they are of and they will be comfortable even like living at the treatment center. As an addictive substance, alcohol can be as bad as drugs. Alcohol abuse and addiction, often referred in general terms as alcoholism, is a common problem in many communities, able to cut across economic and social barriers. You can also visit your local healthcare center or even your local parish and discuss options. Sometimes you may even know that these specific centers for senior addiction treatment are well-suited for their needs.

It also produces a physical dependence and when it does, it becomes a chronic disease. The use of too much alcohol, like drugs, can also increase tolerance and produce withdrawal symptoms. Like drugs, alcoholism can lead to family, health and social problems. It’s not uncommon for alcoholics to destroy family and social relationships, lose their jobs or turn to illegal activities in order to support their habit. It also causes health problems that are potentially life threatening, such as liver cirrhosis and cancer .

Muira puama also called “potency wood”, is a small tree that grows to 5 feet high and is native to the Brazilian Amazon and other parts of the Amazon rainforest. Now-a-days, people are preferring treatment of lower blood pressure naturally instead of using blood pressure medicines.

Muira puama has been used traditionally by tribes in Brazil and the surrounding South American countries. It is a popular, though not well researched, herbal supplement in Europe and North and South Americas.

Its stimulant effect also makes it useful as a herb for depression. Women have used muira puama to treat the discomforts of menopause, as well as cramping associated with menstruation. Muira puama can be combined with other herbs, such as damiana, guarana, catuaba, and suma, to increase its effects.

Now the question is, why do people prefer natural treatment of high blood pressure? The reason is, herbal high blood pressure remedy is comparatively inexpensive than available high blood pressure medication.

Although many people are skeptical about sexual stimulants or “herbal viagra” as such, the muira puama herb has been shown by Dr. Jacques Lelu, a world authority on sexual functioning, of the Institute of Sexology in Paris, France, that it is effective in assisting in increasing sexual desire as well as attaining and maintaining an erection.

Although clinical studies and research are sparse, muira puama is still promoted today as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and as a male aphrodisiac. It has also been used for gastrointestinal disorders and as a treatment for indigestion.

Muira puama does have a stimulant effect that leaves the user with a general feeling of well-being when taken in proper doses. Large doses may cause an overstimulation leaving the user feeling restless and affecting sleep.

Next to muira puama, the other useful herbal remedy for lowering blood pressure, is garlic preparations. This helps in reducing the total cholesterol level. Hawthorne berry is another safe herbal remedy available in the market other than muira puama, for lowering blood pressure. Besides treating high blood pressure, they may also help in treating cardiovascular disease in many different countries.

Anxiety Disorder vs. Panic Disorder

How can one who tolerate any type of anxiety learn to recognize the differences between an anxiety disorder or a panic disorder. Although often bearing familiar physical and mental symptoms, there are some very definitive deviations that make them a unique disorder all of their own.

Organic Characteristics of Anxiety

One of the varying differences between human being who suffers from panic attacks and one who has a standard anxiety disorder, is that symptoms of fear are tipically only displayed during an actual episode. With a victim of anxiety disorder, they carry the feelings of despair and worry with them evey day.

A few elemental afflictions of the principle anxiety disorder can materialize as deep rigidity throughout the body, inability to pay attention for long periods of time, due to insistent worrying, and the lack of being able to fall into a slumber.

Panic attacks are seen a little more aggressively on the physical side as difficulty breathing, feeling disoriented, violent shaking, rapid heartbeat, and many other related problems can be observed.

Difficulties in Daily Life

People who succumb to only a mild form of the principle anxiety disorder can often live a regular every day life with little changes. Due to an inability to stay concentrated, consistent fretting, and being bothersome to loved ones, personal relationships can get very strained.

Severe cases can interfere considerably with the person’s daily life, compromising their capability to hold down a stable job, interact with friends, or even leave their home.

For those with panic disorder, life seems to be in constant limbo with the expectancy of the next big attack. Avoiding situations and special places become common practice so as not to be caught without a means of escape if an attack is brought on. Over thinking and imagining embarrassment can in itself bring on an attack.

Trying to catch an attack before it is brought on, leads many victims to analyze every physical sensation they experience.

On a final note, it is not unheard of for those suffering from generalized anxiety disorder to work themselves into such a state of panic that they actually have a full blown panic attack. This often occurs in situations where there is a real reason to worry, so their normal high level of worry escalates above what they are able of handling.

If there is a rising fear of it occurring again, there could be other panic attacks as a result. Also, some important cases of anxiety disorder can feel a lot like a panic attack at some moments, but it is clearly distinguishable in the duration and type of symptoms.

Coming to Terms with GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder)

December 16, 2009 by Gordon Dalwood

The fictitious beliefs surrounding GAD or generalized anxiety disorder are many. Some say it is not an illness of great import and the people that have this are just suffering from a weak mind. This is just a stereotype that has become commonplace and the accuracy of this diagnosis is totally off-track. Millions of people who have GAD are suffering from a genuine incapacitating condition that is not a figment of their imagination.

GAD is a chronic panic form that is focused on worry and nervousness. Paranoia, fear and nervousness are the feelings a person suffering from GAD will deal with on a regular basis. The feelings will involve personal, family and financial matters. To qualify as GAD, the feelings must be of at least a 6 month duration.

When one suffers from GAD, there will be a tendency to suffer from a variety of symptoms. These symptoms can include drowsiness, lack of energy, irritability, forgetfulness, chronic insomnia, and other issues. In short, so much anxiety if weighing on the person’s mind that the psychological problem starts to manifest in physical ways. This is where the person suffers to the point common life activities are impeded.

In some cases, the sufferer of GAD may experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. This could include flashbacks of traumatic, anxiety inducing events. These intrusive flashbacks can greatly undermine the quality of the person’s life and lead to living a life far less beneficial than one would experience without dealing with GAD. This is why seeking treating for GAD is so important.

The primary step in treatment focuses on receiving a proper analysis. Such an analysis is carried out by a psychiatrist by means of a series of tests. Once the psychiatrist has made a proper diagnosis, they will move on to the next treatment. In many cases this usually involves being given prescriptions for anti-anxiety medication in order to control the problem.

While many patients respond extremely well to such medication, there are of course others who prefer to use the services of a therapist instead, in order to discuss options with regards to counseling. Likewise, there are also some sufferers who make speedy recoveries after being treated with a combination of the two treatments already mentioned.

It is, however, important not to dismiss engaging in simple lifestyle changes to reduce anxiety. Playing sports, cleaning up one’s diet, taking part in hobbies that burn up excess tension can all have a calming and therapeutic. This is why they are considered so valuable.[youtube:qEJ6Nvhq_a8;[link:Cure Panic attacks - Treatment For Anxiety];http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEJ6Nvhq_a8&feature=related]

Those who think GAD is not a serious condition should be dismissed. The opinions of these people are not based on any professional knowledge and are not going to help. The condition is not going to go away by ignoring it and listening to well meaning advice is not advised. This is a myth and has no value as a cure. Seek help from those who know what they are doing.

Statistics reveal that millions of people experience symptoms of anxiety disorder every year and that more women are affected than men. Though anxiety disorders can be diagnosed, in most cases, the root cause of the problem will remain a mystery.

According to the National Institute of Health, approximately 10% of people who experience a panic attack become housebound and refuse to leave their home alone. Almost 30% of people suffering from panic disorder lose their job, get demoted, or settle for a job that they are overqualified for because they cannot handle their regular job responsibilities. Many people suffering from panic disorders and anxiety problems have great difficulty maintaining healthy social relationships and living a productive life.

Sufferers of panic disorders need not lose hope since there are available treatments for the condition. Treatment may include therapy, prescription medicines, supplements, lifestyle and behavioral change or a combination of these options.

There are two main types of treatments for anxiety. The first addresses only anxiety symptoms. Most people who experience elevated feelings of anxiety are familiar with symptoms such as tightness in the chest, sweating, heart palpitations, extreme nervousness, difficulty concentrating, and difficulty breathing. There are several natural ways to reduce these symptoms and help restore the person’s feeling of control and balance.

The second category of treatment on the other hand, tries to cure anxiety disorder by resolving its root cause. Often times, the root of cause anxiety is purely psychological. Common psychological cause may include a past trauma, a present situation or experience, or a negative projection into future events or situations.

Both of these treatments provide options for those who are suffering from anxiety, panic disorder and anxiety attacks on a regular basis. These conditions can be very debilitating, and interfere with day-to-day life. In some cases, anxiety may be coupled with depression, insomnia or other mental health conditions.

The severity of the symptoms varies on a case to case basis. In any case, tracking the symptoms would help in the formulation of an effective treatment plan and help the sufferer handle their condition better. In extreme cases, medical intervention may be needed if the symptoms are so severe that it already interferes with a person’s everyday functions.

It may take time to see any noticeable improvement but panic disorders can be treated. There are actually different options that can be used for treating panic disorders and each treatment plan must be tailored fit for each individual.

Depression Versus Normal Sadness? -Do You Know The Difference?

September 25, 2009 by Katarina Uber

Most of us know at least one person who has been diagnosed with depression. Maybe you think that you may have depression? Do your emotions fit the criteria for depression? Clinical depression affects millions of people. Understanding what depression is can be a first step towards getting the right help. Let’s look at some of the facts.

First of all, having days when you feel down, or sad, is normal. We all have days when we feel blue, or down. It is just part of life. If those sad, blue feelings become your most predominant feelings however, like a dark persistent cloud, your emotions may not be just a “mood” but depression.

Depression is a mental disorder. Depression can overwhelm your mind, your thoughts and your body. It affects your personality, your interaction with others, and your beliefs as well. When in depression it is just about impossible to feel hopeful about anything, including ever feeling happy again.

Since normal feelings of sadness, and the feelings of depression are very similar, differentiating between the two is usually by time and intensity. The feelings from depression are much more intense than a normal reaction to a negative event.

Two weeks is typically the threshold for diagnosing depression. If after a negative life experience you are still withdrawn and sad after more than two weeks it is possible you have entered into a depressive episode. Without treatment a depressive episode can last for months, sometimes years.

The good news is depression is treatable. Through a combination of therapy and medication, up to 80 percent of people with depression get better. But treatment takes time and involves some trial and error, so patience is a must.

Depression can happen to anyone. It is not an affliction of those who are weak. Strong people can get depression as well. if you suspect that you may be suffering from depression, remember, the sooner you get help, the sooner you will feel better.
